THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS: Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (non-insulin-dependent diabetes), particularly in overweight patients whose management with diet and exercise does not produce adequate glycemic control.
Reduction of diabetes-related complications has been demonstrated in overweight adult type 2 diabetic patients treated with immediate-release metformin hydrochloride as first-line treatment after failure of diet (see Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics and Restrictions on use during pregnancy and lactation).
Prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus in patients with prediabetes and at least one additional risk factor, in whom lifestyle modifications alone have failed to achieve adequate glycemic control.
Absorption: After an oral dose of DABEX® XR 500 mg, the absorption of metformin is significantly delayed compared to the immediate-release tablet, with a Tmax of 7 hours (Tmax for the immediate-release tablet is 2.5 hours).

If glucose control is not achieved with the maximum daily dose administered once daily, the following schedule is recommended: In patients already treated with metformin, the initial dose of DABEX XR is equivalent to the daily dose of immediate-release metformin tablets. Metformin and insulin can be used in combination to achieve better glucose control.
